This truly is the thinking of owner, designer Wendy Furman, creator of the irrepressible Whim & Caprice. An artist and art director, Furman has turned her design chops towards creating an irreverent yet sophisticated line of pillows, table top linens and note cards.
Created in 2011 in picturesque St. Helena, heart of the Wine Country, Furman views her life slightly askew, akin to the leaning studio where the view from her window overlooking the vineyard and mountain range are whimsically slanted at an odd angle! How very appropriate to Furman's own point of view.
Whim & Caprice was born at the local St. Helena Farmers Market, where her pop-up booth looked more like a Parisian gift shop than a temporary market stall. It’s here that Furman was able to see if she could do for herself what she had done for companies the likes of Warner Bros., Capitial Records, Geffen Records, and others.
Though a fledging company in its start-up phase, the response to her hand-crafted products have been gaining the attention of well-heeled editorial directors at such outposts like the LA Times, Remodelista, Country Living Magazine, Dwell, etc..
Furman’s concept is to keep it local, hand-made and well-crafted, and is committed to her community. She plans to stay in her adored St. Helena, with its small town friendliness and its generosity towards its neighbors.
Through her wry wit and discerning eye for designs produced for Whim & Caprice, her iconography of choosing are beautiful old etching and engravings, common images, but presented and recontextualized in a fresh modern way that are instantly recognizable as a “Whim & Caprice”.
As Furman so aptly states, “We all need a bit of Whim & Caprice in our lives!”
